## My door is jamming or my deadbolt isn't extending properly. How can I fix the issue of a misaligned door?

We partnered with Leslie Segrete, co-host of the Money Pit and designer on TLC’s Trading Spaces, to help you with a common smart lock issue. Sometimes, a misaligned door can make it seem like your deadlock is malfunctioning and losing battery faster than usual. Learn how to fix your door’s alignment with our simple, easy DIY steps and tips, and get your Yale smart lock working properly! Watch the video (below) for more information:

## My lock came with long and short strike plate screws - what ones should I use?

You should use the longest strike screws you can on your opening. Long screws help provide more stability to the strike plate, which helps make your door more secure against impact events.

**PLEASE NOTE:** long screws may not work on every door, such as doors with sidelights. Please make sure long strike screws will not go all the way through your frame into glass/molding/etc.

## How do I change the lock batteries?

Slide the battery cover up, pull the ribbon in the battery cover to pull out the 4 AA batteries, and insert the 4 new AA Batteries. Reinstall the black cover by sliding it down.

## Why are my batteries draining quickly?

There may be a few reasons why your batteries are draining faster than expected.
First, check to make sure the white cable on the inside of the lock is securely fastened. To do this, you will need to remove the battery cover from your lock, remove the 4 AA batteries, and then unscrew the two small black screws and dismantle the interior side of the lock. The white cable connector has two ridges that should be facing outwards and the cable connector should snugly fit into the adapter located on the interior side of the lock. [This video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KP1LkA21Glk) can help.

You should also check your door prep and alignment. If you deadbolt latch jams when trying to lock the door, this will cause your locks batteries to drain as well. Check out [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnhNOx1G-5o) for help with your door alignment.

Another reason why your battery may be draining could be that, if you’re using a smart home hub (i.e. Samsung SmartThings, Wink, etc), your hub may be too far away from your door. If you continue to see issues, please contact [support@yalelock.com](mailto:support@yalelock.com).

## How often should the batteries be changed?

The batteries are expected to last up to 9 months under normal operating conditions. Extreme high and low temperatures may affect battery performance. If the battery is low, a series of warning beeps will sound and the Assure Lock will also provide you with a visual low battery warning after a valid code has been entered. The lock operates as normal immediately following the alerts. The critical battery indicator causes the Assure Lock to flash red and the lock does not operate.

**For YRD410 or YRD420:** In the event the batteries die, you can unlock the door with your mechanical key backup.

**For YRD430 or YRD 450:** In the event the batteries die, you can touch a 9V battery to the terminals on the front of the lock. This will power the lock up, allowing you to enter your entry code and enter your home. Replacing the battery once every year is recommended to ensure optimal performance.
