# How to Set Up your Yale Smart Lock with Matter

This article will help guide you through the steps to install and set up your Yale Smart Lock.

  

*   Your Matter over Thread border router needs to be set up before starting your lock install. This will ensure the best setup experience. A list of compatible Matter over Thread border routers can be found [here](https://support.shopyalehome.com/en_us/faq-matter-BkfpcDx3yx). 
    
    *   This lock was built to work best with Google Home. If you use a different smart home app, ensure that the app supports features like entry codes. 
    *   Your Matter over Thread border router must be the same brand as the app that you plan to use, e.g. a Nest Hub (2nd Generation) for the Google Home App.
    

  

*   Confirm your phone is on the same Wi-Fi network as the Matter over Thread border router.

  

*   With your phone’s camera (not in an app), scan the QR Code on the Quick Start Guide provided with the lock or go to this [link](https://install.yalehomeus.com/pre-install/yale-smart-lock-designed-for-google-home). This will guide you through lock installation and setup.

    *   You can also use the paper manual provided for installing your lock.

    *   With the door still open, press and hold the gear key on your lock. The lock will extend the deadbolt, then the gear key should start blinking slowly indicating that the lock is ready to be connected to a Matter enabled app.
    *   If the gear key stops blinking, simply press and hold it again to restart the process. 
    *   With the gear key flashing, navigate to the Matter enabled app you wish to set the device up with and add the lock to the Matter network. 
        
        *   If the Matter enabled app tells you to refer to the manufacturer’s site, you have already done this by scanning the QR Code and physically installing the lock. You can skip this step. 
        *   If you need to scan the Matter QR code during lock setup in the Matter enabled app, the QR code can be found on the interior side under the battery cover.
