This article provides steps you can take to improve battery life for Yale products that are connected to the Yale Access App.

**The steps below are for the following locks:**

*   YRD256/226/216/410/420/420-F/430/450/450-N/450-F
*   YRL216/226/236/256

### 1\. Make sure your lock is installed correctly.

An incorrectly installed lock might force the motor to work harder than normal. That could lead to reduced battery life.

Make sure to check the following:

1. Is the tailpiece installed properly through the latch bolt?
2. Is your thumbturn is moving freely?
3. Has your door has been properly prepped? (Meaning the door frame is 1" deep and there is no jam alarm when the door is closed and locked)

You may wish to review the needs for your lock, which can be found on the [Compatibility Checker page](https://support.shopyalehome.com/en_us/compatibility-checker-r1EhREpFV).

The video below shows you how to align or realign your door to ensure your lock functions the best it can.

### 2\. Reduce deadbolt friction.

Make sure that your deadbolt and the strike plate in your doorframe are properly aligned with no friction during deadbolt movement. Resistance to the movement of the deadbolt will force the motor to work harder than normal and reduce battery life.

**The steps below are only for the following locks:**

*   YRD410/420/420-F/430/450-F/450-N

### 1\. Try to improve your Wi-Fi signal.

Poor signal from your Wi-Fi access point will make the Wi-Fi chip in the lock work harder to capture and maintain a connection. That could lead to reduced battery life. If possible, try to bring your Wi-Fi router closer to your front door.

### 2\. Use a Yale Connect Wi-Fi Bridge.

Your lock’s battery life may be negatively affected by the performance of your WiFi access point. This wouldn’t affect your Wi-Fi devices that are not battery powered, but it could have an effect on your Wi-Fi Smart Lock. It may be better if you use Yale Connect rather than your lock’s internal Wi-Fi to remotely control your lock.
