This article explains what it means to hand your Yale Smart Lock, provides the steps needed to complete the handing process, and shares additional troubleshooting steps to try if you encounter issues.   
  

*   What is Handing? 
    *   Handing a lock involves setting the direction that the lock throws the deadbolt. The Yale Smart Lock is designed to fit both right-handed and left-handed doors, and will electronically set the correct handing during the initial set-up process.

  

*   How to Hand Your Deadbolt 
    *   Locking Handing for Matter Setup (Matter Enabled App) 
        
        *   Scan the QR Code on the Quick Start Guide 
        *   Install your Yale Smart Lock by following the instructions
        *   Put the lock in Matter beaconing mode by holding down the gear key when prompted
        *   Your lock will hand itself and extend the deadbolt
        *   This completes the steps for handing a deadbolt.
        
    *   Locking Handing for Bluetooth Setup (Yale Access App)
        
        *   Download the Yale Access App
        *   Open the menu in the Yale Access App
        *   Tap **Set up a Device**
        *   Scan the Yale QR code on the interior side of your Yale Smart Lock, under the battery cover. 
        *   Install your Yale Smart Lock by following the in-app instructions
        *   Your lock will hand itself and extend the deadbolt
        *   This completes the steps for handing a deadbolt.
        

  

*   Troubleshooting: 
    *   You may need to re-hand your lock in the following cases:
        
        *   If the lock was programmed off the door and the lock will not lock or unlock itself
        *   If the lock is moved to a new door
        
    *   Locking Handing for Matter Setup (Matter Enabled App) 
        
        *   From the Matter enabled app the lock is setup in, reset the lock from the app, then do a hard factory reset to start pairing mode. (Insert link to “How to Factory Rest your Yale Smart Lock”) 
        *   Put the lock in Matter beaconing mode by holding down the gear key when prompted
        *   Your lock will hand itself and extend the deadbolt
        *   This completes the steps for handing a deadbolt.
        
    *   Locking Handing for Bluetooth Setup (Yale Access App)
        
        *   From the Yale Access App, select the **Lock Settings icon**
        *   Select the lock you need to re-hand
        *   Select **Handing Calibration** from the **Utilities** section of the Lock Settings menu
        *   Follow the instructions in the app to re-hand your lock
