## What is Matter?

  

Matter is the new universal standard for smart home devices. Many smart home devices today aren't compatible with each other because they use different standards and protocols. Matter was specifically designed to ensure that devices from different manufacturers can talk to each other. The result is a more interoperable smart home: more choice and better experiences for you, the consumer.

  

  

## What do I need to use Matter?

  

You will need: 

1.  A Matter-certified Yale lock 
2.  Compatible Matter hub, and Thread border router from [Google](https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/12391458#matter-app), [Apple](https://support.apple.com/en-us/102078), [Amazon Alexa](https://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&node=37490568011), or [Samsung SmartThings](https://support.smartthings.com/hc/en-us/articles/11219700390804-SmartThings-x-Matter-Integration)
3.  A compatible mobile device

## What features will I have access to on my Matter-enabled lock?

  

*   Matter is still a growing standard and not all partners offer the same lock features. While Yale locks are capable of doing many things over Matter, a partner may only choose to show select features. Please be sure to check what options your Matter control system will support to ensure the features you need are available in that system.

## Can I use any Matter and Thread border router with any software?

  

*   No, you can't. You generally need to use the app provided by the manufacturer of your Matter and Thread border router to control the lock. 

  

## Why should I use Matter over another technology?

  

*   What's most unique about Matter is that it's a secure, open source technology developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, which means it's not tied to any specific brand or company. Smart Home industry leaders like Google, and hundreds of smart home device manufacturers alike have committed to supporting Matter, which will help ensure that Matter is the industry standard moving forward.

  

## What is the battery life?

  

When enrolled in Matter, YRD510 should have 12 months of battery life. 

  

## How far can the lock be from the Matter over Thread border router?

  

*   The range of your device will be dependent on the construction of your house. For best connectivity, the Matter over Thread border router should be within 50 feet of the lock. If you are having issues, try moving the Matter over Thread border router to be within 25 feet of the lock.
    

  

## What app do I use to control my lock?

  

*   This lock is designed to work best with Google Home. Connect your lock to Google Home via Matter. 
*   You can also use Apple Home app, Amazon Alexa app, or the Samsung SmartThings app to control your lock by connecting via Matter.

## Can I set the lock up in more than one Matter enabled app?

  

*   Yes, the lock can be set up in more than 1 Matter enabled app. However you will need a compatible Matter over Thread border router for each Matter enabled app the lock is setup with. 
*   For the best experience, we recommend only setting up entry codes in one app. 

  

## Can I set up the lock in Yale Access app and a Matter enabled app?

  

*   The Yale Smart Lock can be set up using either the Yale Access App via Bluetooth or a Matter-enabled app via Matter over Thread. However, it cannot be configured or operated in both apps simultaneously.
